Welcoming Spring

2016-03-08

kids being kids -- playing with water on the kitchen floor.

Happy “feels like spring even though it’s not really supposed to be spring yet” weather!  It hit 70 the other day. Hooray!

Ava put on her bathing suit today. (That’s how we welcomed spring in Texas.) I think it’s so funny how she views the cold here. She ran around the house in her bathing suit well into December, couldn’t understand why I was making her wear a big puffy jacket, and the days it hit 40 degrees or more, she ran outside in shorts and a t-shirt only to have me to call her back inside for some layers.

She spent most of her life in Texas, so I totally get it. I’m all up for celebrating North Dakota spring in early march too!

(Except for the bugs.) Ava spotted a little lady bug the other day and named it Nina (and I’m totally ok with that.) But it’s been months since I have seen any sign of creepy crawly life, and with the little spider crawling across the floor and the buzzing fly running into my living room light bulb over and over yesterday, I think I’m a little more grateful for the really chilly days.

But not enough to discourage spring! We are warmly welcoming it with walks and parks and snacks on the back porch and apparently, bathing suits.

(These pictures are from when Ava made her own spring–back in November. Some of these pictures still make me cringe a little. Once it’s done you might as well have fun, right!? At least I had fun watching them…and resisting the urge to clean it all up. :))

Oh Christmas Tree

2016-01-07

We stayed in a brand new house for part of the time we were in Utah, so Jake thought it would be nice to bring our own Christmas tree from home. I laughed when he first suggested packing up our seven foot tree, hauling it one thousand miles to Utah, and setting it all up again. But he did it! And we all thoroughly enjoyed it.  It reminded me of the time he wanted to bring our ice cream drumsticks to the beach. We paid more in dry ice than we did for the ice cream, but it was definitely a treat we’ll remember!

He’s mostly practical, but he’ll go the extra mile to make things special. I really like that.

Also, I haven’t been able to edit many of our family videos lately, (which are some of Jake and Ava’s favorite things to watch) so I edited together a little video of our Christmas together in Houston last year as a little surprise for Jake. It was our first Christmas without our families, and even though we missed being with them, we really loved the quiet simplicity of having Christmas with just the three of us (Hyrum was born 5 days later.) I’m sure it will be a Christmas that we always remember.

A Drive to the Countryside

2014-10-032015-12-05

Jake heard about a big antique show about an hour and a half north of us in the countryside, so we decided to make the trip and make a day of it. We didn’t end up buying anything (being an avid garage saler myself, I was kind of shocked at the prices) but we had a good time together anyway.

Jake, looking at a real estate magazine. Someday we’d love to own land in a place like this. We’ll keep dreaming. 🙂

Like a River

2014-09-192015-12-05

Look what we woke up to this morning!

Sometimes when it rains, it rains a lot. And this happens.

Fortunately our house is always just fine, and we all get to stay inside together for a little bit. The water subsided within a few hours and Jake was able to go to work. But for a little while we had a legitimate reason to keep him home with us!

San Antonio

2014-09-132015-12-05

We had heard a lot about San Antonio, so we decided that it was time we checked it out! That, and our planned trip to Destin and Disney World fell through last minute, so we wanted to at least make up for it by doing something fun together. 🙂

We drove up in the afternoon on a Friday, toured the Alamo, rode on a riverboat,  and ate lunch on the Riverwalk. From there, we went to our hotel, played in the pool, and ordered room service for dinner (for the first time ever, which was fun for us.) Saturday we visited the ocean animals and Sesame Street characters at Sea World and headed home!

It was a great little trip. 🙂
